Everyday Counts

Being at school every day counts. If your child is absent one day per week, this quickly adds up to two months of missed school in a year.

Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading. Our school endorses the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development's policy in relation to the ‘every day counts’ initiative and is firmly committed to improving student's attendance at school.

Every day counts is an initiative aiming to improve attendance at school. 

If for any reason your child must miss school, there are things you can do with your school to ensure they don’t fall behind:

• Speak with your classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up.

• Develop an absence learning plan with your teacher and ensure your child completes the plan.

We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes.

Student Absence Notification

If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods:

1. Online via the Compass Parent Portal.

2. Telephone the school office on 03 9782 1333, press 1 to report your child's absence. Leaving a voice message with your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason.

3. Email the school absence email absence@bfps.vic.edu.au and include your child’s name, class, date of absences and reason. 
    

Notifying us of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and well being of your child. ​
 
Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent?

Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school. From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If we haven't received notification parents/carers will be contacted through either email or text message.
